Amazon FBA is becoming more and more popular by the day.

Even in the saturated times of 2022, there is still a ton of opportunity to generate new FBA businesses that increase at a rapid rate.

There are a lot of things you need to do right in order to become a successful Amazon seller, many of which we have already discussed on this blog.

But the one thing that you absolutely have to do right, is Amazon product research.

Trip up on this and you may dive headlong into a niche with almost no demand, or one with so many big established players that you don’t really stand a chance.

How to Do Amazon Product Research

There are several different stages to product research to keep in mind:

  • Researching what sells on Amazon in high enough volumes
  • Finding the right niche
  • Finding the best products to sell in that niche (high demand, low competition)
  • Avoiding Amazon’s brand and category restrictions
  • Researching your competitors
  • Researching manufacturers, shipping costs, selling fees etc

In this guide, we will discuss best practices for all of the above, showing you in easy-to-read terms how to do product research in an effective way that will allow you to find great Amazon FBA product ideas and be aware of the market before entering it, setting you up for the best possible ROI.

Let’s start with the basics for those who are new to the whole concept – you can skip forward to any section you like if you have a little more experience.

What is Amazon Product Research?

Amazon product research is the act of analyzing the correct Amazon market to find opportunities or gaps in the market to fulfil.

In other words, it’s how to find a good product to sell on Amazon – which is a little more complicated than just looking for viral Amazon products or “what’s popular”.

It can also refer to finding products to sell on Amazon in general, researching what sells, what doesn’t, and what you would need to do to build a successful business with a specific product range.

In other words, it’s finding Amazon product ideas the smart way – making sure you are entering the market in the best possible way, as opposed to just blindly diving in with a product because you’d like to sell it.

It may sound like the best Amazon products are the cheapest products that can be sold for the highest price, but there is a lot more to it than that.

For example, if you have the best profit margins in your category, but you also have the worst quality product, you are going to receive a lot of bad reviews and really struggle to get orders.

Searching for product ideas to sell on Amazon is a delicate balancing act of branding, pricing, logistics, negotiating with manufacturers, competitor analysis, and more.

Lucky you have us to make it as simple as possible then, right?

After all, this really isn’t something to skip:

Why is Amazon Product Research Important?

Of course, the first reason is make sure your product or products are as high quality and appealing to the buyer as they possibly can be.

It’s also worth noting that private label products often sell more and as the below graph from Neilsen shows, perception of private labels is generally favorable everywhere:

With a huge amount of sellers that just continues to grow, private label is becoming more and more important by the day and just using somebody else’s product and slapping your own label on it is no longer adequate.

A good idea is to find the best selling products on Amazon, then analyze each one to find a product that is selling enough or has low enough competition (or both) that you are fairly sure you can jump right in and start making sales.

You can also check the reviews of these products to see if buyers are generally happy with them or if there is something they feel is missing – a lot of negative reviews is a sign that something can be improved about the product, and being the one to do that will give your sales a good boost.

In other words, the best Amazon FBA products need to:

  • Have high enough demand/sales volume to know you can make a good amount of sales if you get everything else right
  • Have the potential for a good profit margin
  • Have as little “major player” competitors as possible (less competition period is good too, obviously)
  • Sell all year round (i.e. not Christmas lights or Easter eggs)
  • Ideally be light, small and easy to ship
  • Ideally, have space for you to develop and improve the product beyond what is offered elsewhere.

The selling price is obviously a major factor too.

If your manufacturing cost is low enough and you have the margin, pricing in “impulse buy territory” (around $1-$20) can lead to a lot of extra sales.

However, since you aren’t sure how many sales you will make in the first instance, it can often be a safer bet to go for products with a higher price tag – this means more profit for fewer sales, which is always great.

So once you have a product idea, what are the best strategies to analyze how good of an investment it could be to start selling the product?

We’ve got them right here:

How to Research Products to Sell on Amazon

1: Searching for Product Ideas via Amazon’s Best Seller List

This is by far the easiest method of doing product research for Amazon and should be done regularly whether you have a product idea or not, just to keep you up to date with what’s doing well on the platform.

After all, Amazon lists all of their best selling products for you right here (UK) or here (US).

Besides being a full list of products that have high demand, it can also be a great way to find popular niches to dip into.

2. Other Great Ways to find Product Ideas

Outside of Amazon’s best sellers, you can also find great product ideas in these places, amongst others:

  • Bestsellers on other platforms such as eBay (or even Etsy for homemade product ideas)
  • Retail stores
  • Browsing AliExpress or other supplier sites
  • Blog posts on the topic such as thisthis or this (although, if it’s a popular blog with a lot of traffic, a lot of these ideas may have increased in competition since the post went live)
  • Browsing niche sites to learn what smaller eCommerce sites are offering (or what people are looking for)

Once you have a few ideas, you can use Google Trends to check whether it’s currently trending upwards or downwards.

It’s also a good idea to use Google Keyword Planner or even a good SEO tool such as Ahrefs to find out how many people are searching for things related to your product idea each month.

3. Check what the Competition is Doing

Now that you’ve selected a product or several products that you want to sell based on actual data, it’s time to analyze the competition.

The Manual Method

The first thing you should do is analyze the product listings of your major competitors, and maybe their eCommerce website product pages too.

This can help you figure out a general awareness of the marketplace and things like:

  • What the top ranking competitors are doing with their listings
  • What the lower ones are doing with theirs
  • Both of the above will help to give you an idea of what the target audience is looking for, what sells and what doesn’t

You can even try ordering a product from one of your competitors to learn more about the delivery times, customer service experience, packaging etc they offer to make sure your overall experience is comparable.

Any product that’s an Amazon Best Seller has clearly won it’s position through a well optimized listing that’s appealing to the target market, and as such will be worth analyzing for any techniques you can use yourself.

The Automatic Method (Using Keyworx)

This is a technique that must be done over a period of time like a week or two at the least, and as such it is likely worth doing the manual method first anyway in order to get a good baseline of competitor knowledge.

However, this automatic method is much more reliable and makes it easy for you to see exactly what works and what doesn’t. Once you try it, you will likely want to do it indefinitely since it provides you with the quickest possible way to react to the market and competition.

KeyworX is the most effective and reliable Amazon product research tool available and allows you to easily track the rank of your own products and those of your immediate competitors, giving you instant alerts and updates when a product listing changes in rank:

But what does this mean for you?

Every time a competitor’s rank increases, you will be made aware immediately, allowing you to check their rank and reverse engineer any changes they have made, giving you the same ranking increase.

In the same way, you can look into what has caused any drops in ranking and be sure to avoid making a similar change.

Keyworx ranking alerts will also make you aware when a new competitor enters the market, allowing you to react instantly if necessary.

All of this essentially means that nothing any of your competitors will do can ever get past you again, and gives you the power to optimize your listing based on real-time, proven data on what works.

How can the competition react or outrank you when you know every single step they take and how it affects them?

We’ll answer that for you:

If you do it thoroughly and take the appropriate steps regarding each rank change, they can’t.

Another great technique that can only be done efficiently with the Keyworx Amazon research tool is simply tracking some product listings with Best Seller Rank. If you see one rapidly jump up the leaderboard, it is clearly doing something right that you can learn from – this can be worth checking out and taking the time to understand even if it’s not directly related to your own product. This makes Keyworx a powerful solution as an Amazon product finder too.

Amazon Product Research Checklist

Following the above tips, it will be easy to find a high demand, low competition product that you can make real, long term passive income from by selling on Amazon.

If you have done all of the above FBA product research and think you have a great product idea, but are still not 100% sure, consider comparing the product to this checklist. If most of these are the case for your product, it is likely worth trying:

  • Priced in impulse buy territory (these are less listing sensitive than more expensive products, obviously)
  • Decent sales volume (at least currently selling 10 per day)
  • Good search traffic (top 3 keywords total ~100,000 search per month or more)
  • Lightweight and easy to ship (this one isn’t a must but makes things a lot easier)
  • Constantly in demand (not seasonal)
  • Lower amount of reviews (ideally 150 or less) as this suggests there is no dominant listing that is getting all the orders and getting good reviews from it
